I've looked at quite a few smart lighting system and unfortunately most are highly proprietary end-to-end and frankly just do not offer impressive functionality which is why I suggest rolling your own. It is not that difficult to meet the functionality of solutions that some vendors are asking 6 figure annual licensing fees for. With a home rolled solution you can use a wide variety of end devices, over multiple networks, with your favourite reporting tools, interfacing with analytics services from Google, IBM, Microsoft and others - all for a lot less money.
I would be more interested in domain specialist APIs where you could feed raw data in and get useful insights or actions out. For example, feed in light data including faults and locations and get work plans with optimal routes for maintenance crews out. Preferably standards based as per Stuart's response.
